Unpacking Evidence-based Reading Instruction: LATA presents a series of three after-school sessions with Heather Willms on evidence-based reading instruction for K-3 and struggling readers. Building on the 5 pillars of reading success, each session will include hands on activities and why these strategies support reading growth. These events are free to LATA members. Want to become a member? You can do so through the BCTF Professional Specialists Associations' website:

Session 1: From Speech to Text: How to set up and engage students in Phonemic Awareness and Phonics activities that provide strategies for independent reading and writing. View the recording here (passcode: D7NQ8^nd) and the handouts here

Session 2: Vocabulary Building in the classroom setting. Students are coming to us with decreasing amounts of vocabulary, but we can address these gaps with explicit instruction in word meaning and morphology.

Session 3: Fluency Once students are confidently decoding, developing fluency builds confidence and is a critical component of comprehension. This final session explores activities, phrases and decodable texts that support fluency growth.
