Structured Literacy in Kindergarten
Join Kate Lyon, Kindergarten teacher, as she leads from the classroom and shares her learning journey into the world of structured literacy. This session is chock-full of ideas and insights to enhance your instructional practices, with particular emphasis on being culturally responsive in the Early Primary Years. Our focus will be on oral language development, the alphabetic code, and writing at the sentence level. Questions and dialogue are welcomed and encouraged.
Kate Lyon has lived on BC's North Coast for most of her life. She has 25+ years experience in education, with the majority of those years spent working and learning with vulnerable and marginalized populations. For the past six years, Kate has been infusing playful learning with structured literacy and the results in her classroom are compelling. Kate is one of the founding members of Facebook’s Science of Reading - British Columbia, advocating for equitable learning outcomes in reading and writing. She is currently working toward a Master of Education in Literacy Leadership at Vancouver Island University. Kate resides in Prince Rupert, situated on Ts’msyen Territory, with her husband and their three daughters.
